Alexander Filippovich Kokorinov is a talented architect of the eighteenth century, one of the designers and the first director of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.

The artist Levitsky owes much to his patron Alexander Filippovich, his immense respect for his figure is reflected in this ceremonial waist portrait.

The aristocracy of the portrayed with taste is emphasized thanks to the majestic, open pose of Kokorinov, his beautiful clothes: here is a satin camisole sewn with gold threads, and a snow-white caftan with sable furs. With a confident gesture of his right hand, Kokorinov points to his drawings of the building of the Imperial Academy.

Being in his spacious office, Kokorinov feels pride in the work he has done, this is evidenced by his “master's pose” - leaning on the back of a carved chair, he happily shows the artist his “possessions”. However, the look of the person being portrayed cannot be called proud, Kokorinov looks at the viewer with a laugh, his look is warm and tired, the significance of the work done by him is felt. A sword and a powdered wig are the indisputable attributes of an aristocrat, such as Alexander Filippovich.

Of course, on the face of the director of the Academy of Fine Arts there are no signs of anxiety, foreboding of the impending disorder in your favorite field. There is nothing to signal a storm approaching the fate of an architect. As you know, a few years after the architect took office, his life changed dramatically, the persecution arranged by his "competitors" will break this big and strong man and make him commit suicide.

The strength of the portrait of Levitsky gives the impression of a man firmly moving towards his goal, with a warm spark in his soul. The mastery of Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitsky creates an accurate psychological portrait of the great architect.
